The game uses split screen to facilitate stages that are larger than your average fighting game, you can switch between the ground and sky planes, you have a ki meter which stuns you if it runs out, and you have cinematic super attacks. This sets up a lot of the distinctive features of the Super Butouden series, which are all about imitating the anime. So I think it did a god job of communicating what Dragonball is about.Īnyway. I had no idea that it was based off of anything, but I was hungry for fighting games at the time, and this one was very different, which I thought was cool.īased on the story mode and the fact that I couldn't get much farther than Vegeta, I thought the main gimmick was that it was a fighting game where you assemble a team from the opponents you beat. This was actually my first exposure to Dragonball at all. The one that started it all, unless the series was based off some earlier Japan-only game that I haven't heard of. The arranged soundtracks in particular deserve a listen if you haven't heard them. We've got strong soundtracks since - Dokkan Battle's surprisingly good - but generally they lose that sense of identity. It has a more ecclectic, sometimes fantastical sound that more specifically suits the world of the series. I read a lot of comments expressing fondness for Kenji Yamamoto's PS2 music wherein he just blatantly swiped Stratovarius songs, but I actually think the more original music he was doing in the SNES days is the best the entire franchise has had, even more than any of the anime soundtracks. One thing that I do think is strong about the series was the music. I've heard Shin Butouden was okay, but I didn't get the chance to try that one. they were clunky as hell, and while they gave you a lot of ability to recreate stuff from the series, they didn't have a mind of how to get any gameplay depth by doing so. Let me state now, the games weren't very good for the most part. I'm pretty sure Ultimate Battle 22 fits in here too. Final Bout and Buyuu Retsuden were Butouden games in all but name. Let's count all the games that closely follow its DNA as well.
